There are four main characteristics of tourism. These are intangibility, non-perishability, inseparability, and variability which differ from the physical product which is produced, stored, then sold, and then consumed. The following are the characteristics of the tourism industry. 

1. Intangible

Given the tourism industry operates more on services. This means, they only provide the whole that concerns human power or assistance for the needs of the tourism industry itself. 

We can take an example such as when we travel somewhere, what we automatically prepare are tickets and travel services. It means that what is meant by intangible here is the services we use to be able to travel somewhere. 

2. Non-durable 

Any time we travel and make use of accommodation services. There is a time limit on how long we can stay, of course. This deal comes with a grace period. If we reserved lodging for one day and one night, we were supposed to depart at the designated hour.

3. Inseparable

Using services or products from the tourism industry will usually always be related to one another. When we order tickets, we can also choose a package together with travel services where we just have to accept it and sit down until we reach to our destination. 

Furthermore, when we order hotel lodging, it will usually be a package with consumption. This means, in the tourism industry, each business will always be related to one another. Where the company will provide several things that can support someone's needs on the trip.

4. Different variability 

What is meant by different variability is that each tourism industry offers its own uniqueness and attractiveness. One traveling business will not be the same as other traveling businesses.
