Pengertian Pendidikan Non-Formal

Non-formal education is a combination of the two types of learning mentioned above. Even though taking takes place outside the conventional education system, it has learning as a clear goal. 

Even if no instructor is present, a trainer usually supervises the procedure. We view everyone as a "teacher" and a "student" at the same time because everyone contributes. Non-formal education requires willingness and active involvement, and consequently is closely related to the needs, wants and interests of the participants.

Non-formal education is instruction received outside the formal educational setting, obtained through life experience, or provided by organizations other than schools, colleges, universities, etc.

Non-formal education is any type of institutionalized, intentional and planned learning that is structured and organized but does not result in a formal qualification level recognized by the appropriate national education authority.

Any organized and coordinated educational activity that takes place outside the conventional education system is referred to as non-formal education.

Most of the time, it is customizable, learner-centered, contextual, and interactive. This system does not have a specific target audience; it can be children, teenagers, or adults.

The characteristics of non-formal education 

1. Kurangnya Institusi Formal

In non-formal education, there is no formal system or institution such as a school or college. This means that a system in the non-formal institution is not mandatory and is an additional function for students. 

2. Bersifat sementara 

In contrast to formal education, non-formal education involves learning that is only temporary. If in formal education there are time levels that must be fulfilled and it will take several years. 

In non-formal education only lasts a few periods. Usually it will only last a few months. 

Not only that, while here it can also refer to the existence of a non-formal educational institution itself, which depends on the availability of teachers and students for the learning process to occur. 

3. Pembelajaran yang berfokus pada individu

In non-formal education, learning may be individual-focused and centered. Their ability to learn is taken into account, and instructions are delivered as such.

Here the teacher will place more of his focus on each individual. Individuals as students will also be able to prioritize their own development. 

Therefore, a self-focused system to assess abilities and development is an effective form of learning. 

4. Durasi pembelajaran singkat 

The duration of non-formal education is short and there are exams which are specific and practical. When compared with formal education which takes 7-8 hours. Non-formal education can last only 1-2 hours according to the provisions of students and teachers at the non-formal education institution itself. 

5. Flexibel dalam penetapan waktu

This can be done according to the availability of time set by students and teachers. Not only that, even the placement of the location and time can also be determined by the person concerned.

This is done because remembering is one of the non-formal education that is not mandatory. So that besides carrying out non-formal education activities, a person can still fulfill his obligations as a student in a formal education.

Examples of Non-Formal Education 

1. Majelis Ta’lim 

At Majelis Taklim this refers to the non-formal part which is held by the community for the sake of an increase in one's skills and knowledge. 

Especially increasing ethics in life which relate to Islam. For example, such as in-depth study of the yellow book. 

2. Satuan Pendidikan Sejenis

This refers to activities carried out by the community with the aim of increasing skills and knowledge that are related to the basis of law and are broader than formal education. 

3. Kelompok Belajar

Study groups refer to non-formal education where members of a group of people in an area share knowledge and experience with one another. 

It has a goal of increasing the standard of living in an area. Examples of non-formal education study groups are MSME study groups, youth study groups in villages, and package A study groups equivalent to elementary school. 

4. Lembaga Kursus dan Pelatihan 

The course institution is one of the non-formal education institutions which was established to fulfill learning in terms of skills and knowledge. It also helps for the application of certain mental ethics in students. 

Non-Formal Education Objectives 

1. As an additional support for learning

In taking the formal school level where there is a general level that needs to be achieved, non-formal education is usually a place for students to gain knowledge outside of formal schooling. This is done with the aim of adding insight and additional knowledge outside of formal schooling. 

For example, when taking a college entrance exam, students will usually start to enter formal education in addition to more intensive study time. 

2. As a requirement for the fulfillment of interests and talents

Non-formal education is usually a place for students who want to learn about interests and talents outside the general knowledge provided by subjects in public schools. Examples include courses that provide learning of musical instruments and in the field of sports. 

3. As the interest of further education 

Can assist in completing advanced education where there is attending Sunday school or attending Islamic studies. 

4. As a basic level requirement

As the fulfillment of the interests of basic level education where as an alternative to choosing a formal education level. 

For example, the need for knowledge on health and nutrition if you choose to enter medicine and general knowledge in the field of law for higher education. 

Benefits of Non-Formal Education 

1. Pengembangan Kepribadian

In the learning process in a non-formal education learning will take place where a person will indirectly socialize with many people from different backgrounds from the students. This will also indirectly form a personality depending on the environment in which he carries out this non-formal education. 

2. Peningkatan Pengetahuan 

An increase in knowledge is certainly one of the benefits to be gained if you carry out non-formal education. This can increase knowledge both in a field and social knowledge in life. 

3. Penerapan kemampuan Nasional 

With this non-formal education, it will increase the ability of students to be aware of being a nation and in society where there is human development. 

4. Melatih dan mengasah pada bidang tertentu

The purpose of participating in non-formal education such as in study groups is of course as a place to hone to become an expert in a field. An example is when you want to pursue a field as a future career goal.

Non-formal education is a place to increase knowledge and insight with a certain structure and system. The system will be more adapted to a society and the provisions made by students and teachers. 

This certainly has goals and benefits which are part of binding one's life strata and to increase one's knowledge and skills.
