Candi Sumberawan is one part of the evidence of Indonesian history. We will discuss how the history of the Candi Sumberawan arrived at the specific location of the Candi Sumberawan on this occasion!

History of Candi Sumberawan

This temple can also be called the Sumberawan Stupa. The Sumberawan Stupa was first discovered in 1904. During the Dutch East Indies era in 1937 restoration was carried out at the foot of the temple, while the rest was reconstructed in an emergency.

Archaeologists estimate that the Sumberawan Stupa was formerly named Kasurangganan, a well-known name in the Negarakertagama book.

This place was visited by Hayam Wuruk in 1359 AD, when he was traveling around. From the forms inscribed on the Batur and Dagoba (stupas) it can be assumed that the Sumberawan Stupa was built around the 14th to 15th century AD, namely during the Majapahit period.

Although Candi Sumberawan is located in the Singasari area, Candi Sumberawan is a testament to the results of the legacy of the Majapahit kingdom. The location of Candi Sumberawan was once the place where the Singosari kingdom was founded.

During the time of the Singosari kingdom, Candi Sumberawan was called Kasurangganan. It has the meaning of “garden.” The environment around Kasurangganan in the form of a park makes the name a park designation.

Even during the Majapahit kingdom, it was usually used as a stopover, considering that it was a comfortable and direct place with nature. Not only that, the Sumberawan Stupa is also usually a place for kings to worship.

Therefore, Candi Sumberawan is still used as a place of worship during Vesak celebrations by Buddhists. Moreover, this is also a place to take holy water or tirta by Hindus.

Origin of Candi Sumberawan

The origin of the Sumberawan Stupa actually existed around the 14th century, which means it was already there during the heyday of Hayam Wuruk.

According to Mpu Prapanca's writings on his work titled Kakawin Negarakertagama, King Hayam Wuruk had visited Sumberawan Temple.

There is a saying from archaeologists who did research on the Sumberawan Stupa which has its origins in the Negarakertagama book.

This was visited by Hayam Wuruk, when around 1359 AD.

The length of the Sumberawan Stupa is 6.25m with a width of 6.25m and a height of 5.23m.

Sumberawan Temple has a pedestal that has a square shape. This square base has a size of 6.25 x 6.25 x with a height of 5.23 meters.

Sumberawan Stupa consists of three parts which are the base, foot and temple.

The shape of the Sumberawan Stupa building at the top is still not perfect. This happens because no one has been able to find the right shape at the top. So, you could say the peak has collapsed.

The Batur section has a rectangular floor plan which consists of two levels. These levels are leg 1 and leg 2. The one leg at the bottom has a rectangular plan with seam profiles at the top and bottom of the shelf. Then in the middle there is a panel area which is just empty without any relief.

In this temple building there are no carvings or decorations, especially no stairs going up. Visitors cannot see the top of the temple considering there is no access to the top.

What distinguishes a temple from other temples in general is that there is no space inside the temple to store sacred objects. So that visitors can only enjoy the accessible parts of the temple.

Then, on the outer side of the temple, there are decorative rectangular panels. The panels are decorated with flower petals and also a Greek cross. This Greek cross has an alternating arrangement.

What's more, on the top of the panel decoration and the Greek part, there is a floral motif. The size of the mortar is 101 cm in diameter and 46 cm in height.
